I've already received some memos about why or why not you feel our company should have a wellness program. Remember the memo is due by midnight on Thursday.
This week's reading assignment is Chapter 4, which covers writing memos, faxes, emails, and IMs.
Make sure your read the chapter carefully and use the checklist at the end of the chapter to ensure you meet the basic requirements of writing a memo. The grading rubric I will use to grade your memo is very similar to that list.
Discussion Questions About Chapter 4
- Have you ever used a FAX machine to send or receive a FAX? If yes, what for?
- Do you use email or social networking (Facebook) to communicate with your friends? A recent study suggests that less than 35% of people under the age of 25 use email to communicate. Do you think you will use email in your job?

Should we Meet on GoToMeeting?
Have you heard of GoToMeeting? I would like to schedule a GoToMeeting to discuss our company project? The meeting will occur in a couple of weeks, so stay tuned for the date and time. Participation is required.
I have used a fax machine at my job many times. It is used to send and receive pro card receipts, invoices, and various other documents that we have at the Office of Sponsored Programs at Montana Tech where I work.I also use email every day to communicate with various other businesses and employees. Both of these are great ways to communicate and they make work alot easier. I do not use facebook at all because it is not in my best interests to do so. I have not heard of GoToMeeting but I would be willing to try it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for responding, Michael. I also use email all day - usually hundreds each day. I, however, don't use a FAX machine (I think it's been about 10 years since I sent a FAX using a FAX machine). I do send electronic faxes though.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you are willing to try GoToMeeting - it's a great resource used by many companies.
I use a fax machine at work several times a day. Patrons are not allowed to fax their own materials, so we have to do it for them. Patrons fax all kinds of different things; personal letters, legal documents, and insurance information are the most common. I do not usually fax personal items.
ReplyDeleteI use email to communicate with patrons at work almost every day. I do not use email to communicate with my coworkers unless they are out of town and need a document or other information. I do have a Facebook account, but I do not use it very often to send emails.
This is my first experience blogging and I have never heard of a GoToMeeting, but I am excited to learn about all of this.
I have used a fax machine in a couple of my previous jobs. This summer I worked in the library, and used one occassionally. I also worked in a bank a few years ago and used one there. I don't really like them :)
ReplyDeleteI use email a lot for school but almost never use it to talk to my friends. I use facebook a lot and that is how I send my friends messages.
I'm not really sure if I will use email as a nurse. My mom has been an LPN for 25+ years and she definitely doesn't email anyone for work....she hates computers :)
I think I have seen the commercials for the GoToMeeting thing. Hopefully my computer can run fast enough for something like that....it's basically an antique. As long as it will cooperate I would definitely try it :)
I don't send many faxes at work anymore but I do receive faxes via fax machine and e-fax almost daily. When sending documents, I prefer to scan and email them instead of faxing. The majority of faxes I receive come from outside agencies. Internally most all of the employees scan and email.
ReplyDeleteI use email daily - for internal as well as external communications - and send/receive hundreds of emails weekly. We also use Instant Messages via Yahoo and/or MSN to communicate internally. Email is a great way to communicate information that you need to document/track or possibly refer to later since you can save both sent and received emails to personal folders. For quick messages and communications, IM works well for the employees in our local offices as well as our remote offices to stay connected and communicate. Although our company has an electronic communications policy, they do allow us to send personal emails, when needed.
We also use GoToMeeting. It's a great application to use for training so that employees from different locations can dial in and participate in the training without having to be physically present at the location the training is held. By dialing in and using a specified host IP location, you can listen on the phone and see the documents or training application on your computer. The host "controls" the meeting using his/her computer and the attendes see whatever the host has on their computer screen. Saves alot of time, travel and resources by not having to send your employees to a training seminar off site.
I have used a FAX machine once or twice to send legal documents. I have never received a FAX. I do use email to communicate with my fellow classmates and for anything business related. I’m trying to sell some furniture and my email is how people can contact me about it. But I don’t use email for work. I do have a facebook account, although I don’t use it often. I use it to catch up with those who don’t live here anymore.
ReplyDeleteI’ve seen commercials on GoToMeeting but that’s it.
1. No, I have never used a fax machine. I'm wondering if that is sad?
ReplyDelete2. Yes, I use facebook to talk to friends. But I don't really email because I have no time or patience to sit and write an email. But I do email if I need to contact someone.
1. I use a FAX machine everyday I am at work. I currently work at a health clinic, and I have to send patient records to other doctor's offices. I also recive faxes for patient's records and prescription refills.
ReplyDelete2. I use facebook to keep up on friends and family. I also use email, as it is a good way to communicate with people who don't use facebook, or for matters that are more business-oriented. I know that in my work-life I will use email daily, as I already am using email at the clinic I work at.
1. I have used a fax machine before, but only a couple of times. It was for a company that my mom works for and I had to send her some faxes. I don't even know if I would remember how to use it.
ReplyDelete2. I use facebook everyday. My boyfriend lives 8 hours away during the school year, and we chat on their a lot. I use e-mail almost every day as well. In the nursing program our professors send a ton of stuff to our MT Tech e-mail accounts, and we are responsible for checking it every day.
3. I know this might be crazy but I don't even think I know what a GoToMeeting is. I have never heard of it, and have never used it. I would need some instruction for this.
-I have used a fax machine a few times. I only sent one page at a time. It was to send information to my health insurance company. I used a fax machine at a business I use to volunteer at.
ReplyDelete-I do use Facebook. I have never used any other social networking site before.
-I believe I will not use email very much for my profession. Unless I take on a mamagement position I will probably not be at a desk or computer for email purposes while being an RN. It is ineresting to see that it's estimated at 35% of people under 25 use email to communicate. I would have to say that is probably pretty accurate. Many people of that age do use email, but I think texting has become the most popular form of communication. (I'm refering to personal and not business communicaiton-I don't know if this setting is in or out of the workplace).
-I have not heard of GoToMeeting. I am interested to find out what it entails...
ReplyDelete1) I have used a fax machine to send information before, but I have never used it to receive anything. The reason I have not used a fax as often as most people is because I have no need to use one. The only time I remember using one was just recently when I needed to fax internship paperwork to Montana Tech. I do however, find fax machines fairly easy to use.
ReplyDelete2) Almost everyone I know uses a form of social networking to stay connected with one another. I use facebook daily to communicate with my friends and family. I really enjoy facebook and think it is a great and easy way to stay in touch with everyone. I also use email quite often but not as often as I would like to. I sometimes prefer using email to facebook because it is a more private way of communicating with others. Email is very important when dealing with ones job. Through email everyone can stay up to date on what is going on with one's company, so yes I do believe I will use email quite often in my job.
3) I have never heard of GoToMeeting but I would be open to trying it out!
1. I use a fax machine on a daily basis at my job. I fax items for customers and I send/receive faxes for work.
ReplyDelete2. I use email alot to communicate with family, friends and at work for business. I also have a facebook account but I don't access it very much. I think email is a great way to communicate because you can send mass emails to send information. I think alot of jobs will use email, I know I use it alot right now.
Like some of the others I have never blogged before and I have never used GoToMeeting before. This will be a great fun learning experience.
Yes I have been using the fax machine at work for many years now. It is the fastest way for us to get test results back from the labs. Also I use the fax to send copies of records to the other companies that we deal with for mutual clients.
ReplyDeleteI use email and social networks like Facebook all the time to keep in touch with friends and family that I dont get to see very often. I do think that I will be using email for my job later on. Email isn't a big part of my job now, but I see myself using it in my future career to stay on track with projects or tasks that are being done within the company.
I have used a fax machine for years. At one time that was one of the fastest forms of communication. This was long before emails, scanning and most items of communication today were used . I still fax documents every week for my business but, I am changing that to scanning and emailing the same information.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit that for awhile I was addicted to Facebook. I would be on it for hours playing games, catching up with family or finding old friends. Especially since all my family is in NC it is nice to see pictures of the niece and nephew or visit with my dad.
Honestly I have no idea what GoToMeeting is but, I am always up for a new adventure.
I have used a fax machine before. When I work at my grandma's store, it's one of the many services. I also use a fax machine at my current job.
ReplyDeleteI do use email and social networking sites. I use email for both work and fun and I know that I will be using email in my future jobs. I use my facebook just to keep in touch with old friends.
I have never heard of GoTo Meeting either.
ReplyDeleteI have never used or heard of GoTo meeting. Is it another blog?
